Champ. Open d’Australie U18/23 AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR BOCCE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2009
Under 18 and Under 23 “Freccia Azzurra Club” KEYSBOROUGH, Vic. This two day Bocce Tournament bought together the best Juniors that Australia had to offer. Seventeen Under 18 years and Under 23 years athletes from Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, contested a total of 10 events on the 18 and 19 April 2009. The Freccia Azzurra Club, located in Keysborough, Victoria, put it’s six bocce courts at the disposal of the Bocce Federation of Australia for this event. The success of this event was due to the support given by the Bocce Federation of Victoria and the Freccia Azzurra host Club, their President Nino Donazzon and their management.
As well as the Traditional forms of the game, the Singles and the Doubles, the Juniors also competed in the more spectacular Bowl Throw, Precision Throw and the Progressive Throw. In the Under 18 years division, Matthew Moffatt, Vic White was the outstanding player winning gold in both the Singles and the Progressive Throw, then winning silver with Ivan Pepe in the Doubles. Victorian teams were the standout teams this year, thanks to their match practice and experience. The young teams from NSW will be a force to be reckoned with in future years. The Under 23 years competitions seemed to be a two horse race, with Joshua Norton, Victoria and Anthony Messina, NSW winning two titles apiece. Joshua taking out the Singles and Bowl Throw titles, while Anthony claimed the Precision and Progressive Throw Titles. With these results, it was no surprise that the Referees awarded the Under 18 Best and Fairest award, to Matthew Moffatt and the Under 23 Best and Fairest award to Josh Norton. We missed the participation of the Chinese teams this year. Their women, who competed in the Australian Junior Titles last year, recently won four gold medals at the World Women Bocce Championships. They have promised to compete in the 2010 titles. At the presentation ceremony, on behalf of the BFA, awards were made by Raymond Cher President, Frank Funari Secretary and coordinator of the event, and Tony Biancacci National Coaching Director. The Victorian President Michael Pascuzzi congratulated the participants. Awards were also made on behalf of the host Club Freccia Azzurra by the President Nino Donazzon and coordinator Frank Cengia. |
